Do i need a RETURN airline ticket to apply/be granted a Working Holiday Visa for the UK, or is a one way ticket acceptable and then purchase the return ticket once i am there and ready to return?

Get a round trip ticket , plan out a schedule that would fit your working holiday visa. Better sure than sorry because anything can happen.

You don't technically need one, but if you don't have one then you will be asked to provide very clear proof that you have the ability to finance a ticket to leave, and in general customs will be far more suspicious about granting you entry.
